New map of Azerbaijan mud volcanoes

Map of mud volcanoes of oil-gas bearing provinces of Azerbaijan SSR in scale 1 : 500 000 was compiled in 1978, 25 years ago. Since that time there had accumulated much new data concerning provinces of mud volcanism development as onshore and azeri sector of the Caspian Sea. New map of Azerbaijan mud volcanoes and adjacent water area of the Caspian Sea has been compiled in 2001 in department of mud volcanism of Geology Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (authors: Ad.A. Aliyev, A.A. Bairamov, I.S. Belov, A.N. Mamedova) under the editorship of academician Ak.A. Alizadeh and corresponding member of AzNAS I.S. Guliyev.

There are many innovations on the map. It is compiled on the geodynamical base, with detailed definition of volcanoes location coordinates. For the first time there distinguished two genetically related components: mud volcanoes and mud volcanic manifestations, the total number is 270. One third of onshore volcanoes are corresponded to the latter. Mud volcanoes and mud volcanic manifestations abundantly bleeding oil are distinguished as well. Besides it a new more improvement classification of mud volcanoes according to morphological signs and character of activity is given. From the point of view of new data there examined the tectonics of the mud volcanic zones of Azerbaijan, new fault structures and microblocks are distinguished. Anticlinal zones with mud volcanoes located beyond them are traced in the Azerbaijan water area.

The map is accompanied with the explanatory note the describes in details many theoretical and practical issues of the mud volcanism, in particular the regularities of the spatial distribution of mud volcanoes, tectonics of mud volcanic zones, specific features of volcanoes eruptions, geochemistry of their activity products, volcanism relation with seismicity. The comparative analysis of onshore and offshore volcanoes is given; issues of prognosis of oil-gas content of deep Paleogene-Miocene deposits of Azerbaijan depression zones are defined more exactly.

Map of mud volcanoes of the Caspian Sea (the southern bath). Scale 1:500 000

    Editors: H.B. Yusifzade, I.S. Guliev

The South Caspian Basin is a classic region of mud volcano occurrence. The great number of mud volcanoes and the large amounts of mud breccia and combustable gas these volcanoes produce make this "museum of nature" unique.

With the South Caspian Basin, mud volcanoes occur in eastern Azerbaijan and western Turkmenistan, but in the majority of the basin is today submerged beneath the Caspian Sea. However, mud volcanoes are known to occur on the sea-floor too.

Drawn on the map 167 mud volcanoes are irregularly spread in South Caspian water area. There were established 5 mud volcanic regions depending on the concentration of mud volcanoes in different parts of sea: bottom, character of their manifestation and peculiarities of geological structure of the Earth crust: Absheron - Cheleken, Azerbaijan - Anzelian, Central - deep water, Turkmenistan - Gorganian, Iran - deep water areal.

The map issued in 1978 in scale 1 : 500 000 represents a generalization of all actual materials according to results of geologic-geophysical and geochemical studies carried out in provinces of mud volcanoes distribution for the period of 1930-1977. Map with detailed explonatory note was compiled for the first time in geological practice on the geologic-tectonical base and contains all the necessary information on structural localization of mud volcanoes and geologic-geochemical peculiarities of their activity products. The map reflects a correlation of the mud volcanism with hydrocarbon accumulations of deposits of various complexes. Besides the scientific value, this map has a practical significance for planning the prospects for oil and gas.
